International Day of Women and Girls in Science
WHAT IS INTERNATIONAL DAY OF WOMEN AND GIRLS IN SCIENCE?
In December 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to establish February 11 as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science with the aim “to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.”
The Salk Institute is committed to increasing gender representation and diversifying the STEM pipeline more broadly through our efforts and initiatives with our following Spring and Summer programs:
- Heithoff-Brody High School Scholars Program – application deadline is April 15.
This eight-week paid internship is an opportunity for high school students to gain real-life experience performing scientific research while developing skill sets needed for careers in a STEM. field while being mentored by Salk scientists. - Diverse Inclusive Scientific Community Offering a Vision for an Ecosystem Reimagined (DISCOVER Symposium) – application deadline is March 1.
Future postdoctoral candidates will be invited to the Salk Institute to present their research, connect with other trainees, participate in various professional development workshops and panels, and network with potential Salk faculty advisors to facilitate mentor-mentee pairing opportunities across disciplines of biology, a format not typically found in traditional postdoctoral interview formats. - Salk Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (Salk SURF)
The Salk Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (Salk SURF) is a 10-week fully paid internship that provides students with exposure to and experience in biomedical research, access to world-class research facilities, and a network of mentors. - Salk Elevating Diversity in Graduate Education (Salk EDGE)
The Salk EDGE is a two-week summer program that aims to Elevate Diversity in Graduate Education by equipping graduate students for competitive careers in academic science. - Rising Stars Symposium
Every year, Salk brings underrepresented postdoctoral fellows to the Institute for the one-day Rising Star Symposium. A selected number of nominated trainees receive the Rising Star Award and an invitation to the Rising Star Symposium where they present their research and meet with faculty one on-one and over dinner.
